As many of your know, Ann and I own a 3 unit resort rental building in Mexico. It is located in the small fishing village of La Manzanilla. It is a lovely friendly community. Ann refers to it as her Mexican Qualicum Beach. Late last October Hurricane Patricia struck the coastline 7 miles north of the village at 200mph. The village and surrounding area took a direct hit. While there was no loss of life the damage was major to both buildings and the landscape.
We have just returned from a quick trip down to deal with the damage to our own home. While serious, it was minor in comparison to the damage to so many of the homes of residents in the surrounding communities. For many, the destruction caused by wind and rain created a total loss. It is this group of people that are still in need of support.
Having never been in the aftermath of a major disaster I wasn’t sure what to expect. The damage, the uprooting of families, the lack of safe dry housing, the massive amounts of debris, were all expected. However the perseverance, the willingness to tackle the situation and make the most of a tough time was wonderful to see. The community is back on its feet in the commercial sector and along the beach front. However it is the residential streets in the local neighbourhoods where assistance is still needed.
We have connected with a small group of local business people who are working to assist various homeowners in need. I have been out with them inspecting properties of applicants in need and have been impressed with the approach. To that end we are raising funds to support this immediate need in the community there.
This Friday evening at 6:30 Ann and I are hosting a special wine pairing event at our home. Fine wines, lovely cheeses from Charelis in Victoria as well as charcuterie and other fine foods. An evening of discovery, education and great food. We have room for a few more guests and thought that there may be a few Rotarians that would be interested in attending. I know it is short notice but either you can or you can’t! Make it your dinner date. Obviously a donation would be appreciated for enjoying the evening. All funds will go to repairing the homes and contents of villagers. Stoves cost $80, beds $100 and one roof of a home roughly $250. Small donations go a long way.
