Polio Plus - The Last Inch

I remember in the 80's when this program, started by a club in the Philippines, seemed so unlikely to succeed. There were hundreds of thousands of new victims each year in those days (even though in our western world it seemed to be history) but Rotary took it on and now it is getting near the end.

This article in the Guardian tells the story of the expected reversals that come along in the last inch of the efforts of Rotary and the WHO to eliminate polio:

I hope that those few who receive Christmas gifts from me will be grateful for recognition, like those we give our guest speakers, indicating the number of children who will never suffer the ravages of polio because of the vaccine provided by Rotary with the donation I will be making in their name. It seems that $50 vaccinates about 100 children.

I found it a bit fussy to make such a donation. If someone finds an easier way, please comment below.

I went to the website of The Rotary Foundation (Canada) at:
http://trfcanada.org/
They have a donation link at

I went to the Memorial or Tribute Gift link which goes to the RI site. From there I printed off forms and mailed them off to the Canadian address with a cheque. It can be done by Visa or Mastercard but I would rather that all of my donation goes to vaccine so I sent a cheque.

Rotary has done a recent video about the Last Hurdle which you can see here:
