Around Rotary’s World
Vocational Service
Parksville AM Rotarian Bashir El Khalafawi has just been appointed Vocational Service District 5020 Chair by District Governor David Stocks. Bashir brings many years of Rotary Service, both at the club and district level to his new assignment. His first task has been to recruit members to the Vocational Services Committee and to that end Bashir announced this morning that our own Bob Brown has been invited and has agreed to sit on the Committee.
RI describes Vocational Service as follows:
Through vocational service, Rotarians are expected to adhere to and promote high ethical standards in all their business dealings, recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contribute their professional expertise and skills to addressing societal problems and needs. The Four Way Test is, for Rotarians, the expression of vocational ethical behavior.
In practice what Vocational Service has become for many clubs has been a focus on youth and in particular vocational education. To that end Rotary clubs have supported their local schools by providing scholarships for students embarking on higher education; certainly that’s been the focus of our club's involvement with KSS.
With the advent in 2010 of Rotary’s Fifth Avenue of Service, called “New Generations” there has been some confusion at both the club and the District level about the role of Vocational Service. What’s the mandate and where does Vocational Service fit in the 2011-12 scheme of things?
The challenge that Bashir, Bob and the rest of the Vocational Services committee have will be to articulate, for the District and for clubs, the role of Vocational Service in our District in today’s Rotary world.

The Career Centre is a project of the Central Vancouver Island Job Opportunities Building Society (CVIJOBS), a non-profit Society that provides work and career related services to residents of the Parksville/Qualicum area. They have been in the community since 1977 and were formerly known as Outreach 69.
Their goal is to provide personalized services that reflect the changing needs of the District.
All of their services are free and available to residents of the Parksville/Qualicum area. In addition to a multitude of self-serve resources and group workshops, they offer individual employment and career assistance.:
- They offer interest and ability assessments,
- They help clients prepare job resumes and provide coaching on interview skills

- They provide telephone messaging services to support clients job search.
- As a service for clients, local employers are encouraged to advertise job openings using their complimentary job posting service.
The Local Labour Market has over 400 jobs posted and that probably represents only 20% of the jobs available in our region.
In 2011 in the Regional District of Nanaimo and Comox-Strathcona for the period Jan 1 to March 31 there were a total of 10 projects underway with a total value of $560,000; 7 projects worth $6.6 Million on hold; and 20 projects worth $6 Million that have been proposed.
Larry also indicated that the Hart Dam reconstruction project, worth billions, is in the planning stage and when the project is underway the impact on our area will be huge.

Twenty children will be immunized against Polio in Larry’s name; Thank You Larry

Derek phoned to say he was on the Sign In Desk next week not Mike as reported in the Next Weeks Activity Roster. So do I conclude that Derek read Scuttlebutt and Mike didn't?
