She and Ed visited George Venner in hospital in Nanaimo on Sunday. George did experience a very mild heart attack on Thursday and will stay in Nanaimo until probably Tuesday when they will transport him to VGH in Victoria for a Stent procedure. George hopes to be back at Rotary in a couple of weeks. George looked great and was very positive so a couple of thumbs up for George. ![]() ![]() Earlier this month Ed, in his capacity as Assistant Governor, had convened a meeting of Area 2A Presidents and President’s Elect to meet with Past District Governor Bill McCarthy who is the District 5020 representative on the prestigious RI Council on Legislation Committee. Bill has over the last couple of months met with every President and PE in our District. The Ri Council on Legislation that meets next in 2013 is the body that, every 3 years, receives and deliberates on proposals for changes to Rotary that come from clubs and Districts around the world. Our Area 2A Presidents had several preliminary meetings prior to meeting with Bill. It was our impression that proposals that came from any one club would carry more weight if the proposal had the support of all six clubs in our Area. One Proposal on Attendance requirements, put forward by our President Allan Gannon, did received support from the six clubs and was presented in draft form at our meeting with Bill McCarthy on October 13. Allan will prepare a final draft of the proposal which will be in the form of an enactment, meaning that if it is approved by the RI Council on Legislation it will come into effect immediately. The final draft will be presented to all six clubs seeking approval by a vote of the members in each club. Then a letter of Enactment from each club supporting the proposal will be forwarded to Bill McCarthy which he will then include in his report to his colleagues on the committee well before the deadline of December 31, 2011. Allan is to be congratulated for first of all pulling this together but secondly for focusing in on the attendance issue; the RI attendance policy as it is drafted is draconian by today’s standards and has been very contentious issue in our club as long as I’ve been a member. Induction Ceremony ![]() Mike Haas, pinch hitting for Stuart Jackson with Membership Director Larry Mix presented our newest Sunrise Rotarians, Dennis Finnegan and Bob Michaelson with their Rotary Pins at this mornings meeting. ![]() Welcome to our club and to Rotary Dennis and Bob Program ![]() Carol and Mike and several other Sunrise Rotarians traveled to Port Alberni on Saturday night to take in the Annual Oktoberfest Celebration that is sponsored by the Europa Club and has been operating successfully for 38 years in the Valley. The purpose in their attending the event was to learn about what might be involved in our club taking on an Oktoberfest Celebration as a fundraiser next Rotary year. Mike will be presenting a Proposal at the next Board meeting which is scheduled for November 15th, stay tuned. ![]() Spotlight on Roses ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The operation begins in Allan and Marjorie’s garage on Thursday morning as a motley crew arrives to fill water pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Roses arrive just before noon and Rose preparation begins ![]() ![]() Water Pic handling like Rose Prep is a task that requires Rocket Science like abilities and our Rose Prep and Pic teams were selected for these challenging jobs based on their intelligence and problem solving skills and that’s reflected in their appearance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Finally the creme de la creme of the Rose preparation team, the people responsible for the final product, the product that’s revealed to our customers when they open their Box of Roses. ![]() And our fearless leader who, as he surveys the last boxes being packed just after 4:15 pm, realizes that his work is just about to begin; the printing of the labels and the organization of the 19 Delivery routes. Ken finally will get to bed sometime after 3 am.
