Around Rotary’s World

Parksville AM and QB Sunrise – Doing Good in Oceanside

Hat’s off to Coats for Kids Chair Kay Burgoyne and her committee of Ken Armstrong and Mike Haas Directors of Community Service in Parksville AM and QB Sunrise respectively.

Sunrise Rotarians Dennis Finnegan, Gerry Herkel, Robin Carr, Debbe Patterson, Doug Arbo, Bob Michaelson and Allan Gannon with Parksville AM’ers Kay Burgoyne, Ken Armstrong and George Pearson prepare to sort through the bags of clothes in preparation for the next days Coats for Kids extravaganza.

Over the past several years our two clubs have often collaborated or partnered on projects. Parksville AM Rotarians are strong supporters of our Roses fundraiser and we reciprocate by supporting their Taste of Oceanside. In 2010-11 our Vocational Committees jointly sponsored the Trades and Tech Fair and for the last 2 years we’ve partnered in the Coats for Kids project. Scuttlebutt believes this is just the tip of the iceberg and that there are other cooperative opportunities just waiting to happen. How about a joint membership initiative?

Rotary Moment

Rotary technology was David’s Rotary Moment topic this morning; more specifically QR’s and Find A Club AP’s What’s a QR and what’s an App you ask? David explained that we have a QR or Quick Response logo at the entrance to Rotary House and that if you take a photo of the QR it will take you to our Sunrise website.

If you download the Rotary “Find A Club AP” it will give you information on where and when clubs meet; so if your in Dublin or Melbourne and you want to do a make up your Find A Club AP will give you the information you need.

Program

One of the things that are an essential component of a successful International project is trust. The International club that is providing the resources for a project overseas must have established a good working relationship with the overseas Rotary club and must feel confident that the resources they are providing will be used as intended and that the project will unfold as planned.

Derek Jay has spent time in Davao a city of 1.2 million on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and visited the Rotary Club of Davao. The Davao club was involved in a Literacy, Lifeskills and Livelihood (3L) Development and Assistance Project for the local rural Bagobo people. While there Derek learned that the project was in jeopardy because of a lack of funds.

Derek returned to Qualicum and provided our International Committee with the opportunity to assist the Rotary Club of Davao with the funding. Because Derek had developed a personal relationship with members of the Davao club we were assured that any assistance we might provide would be utilized effectively. We contributed to the 2 successive years and the project has now been completed.

As a result of Derek’s initial contact with the Davao Rotary Club and our participation in the 3L project we have established the connection and the trust that is so important for possible future projects in support of the Bagobo people .
