50 YEARS AGO

The town's of Qualicum Beach and Comox were mourning the death of their former MLA Herbert John Welch, who died in Victoria. Welch was 64. He was first elected to the legislature in 1945 as a Coalitionist and again in 1949. A past president of the Qualicum Rotary Club, Welch was named governor of Rotary District 152 in 1957. District 152 includes all of Vancouver Island and Washington State.
