I graduated from Ballenas in 1977 (attending my 30 year grad reunion last weekend) and went on to study in the Bachelor of Science program at UVIC for one year. Unsure of what I wanted to do at that time I went to work at a sawmill in Port Alberni for two years then attended a pre-apprentice electronics course at Camosun College in Victoria. From there I was hired by BCTel and worked installing phones in homes and businesses for 6 years before transferring inside for a more technically oriented job on the electronic telephone switch. My partner and I now look after over 50 sites from Nanoose to Deep Bay and west to Bamfield, Tofino Ucluelet and all the small villages around them. I turn up and maintain a wide variety of equipment including microwave radio, subscriber radio and fiber optic multiplexers. I enjoy the variety and different places I have to work with the added occasional bonus of flying to the west coast in a helicopter to maintain radio equipment at Estevan or Pachena light houses.
