Announcements

President David announced the first Board Meeting of the Rotary year tonight, 7 pm at Rotary House. David reminded us that our board meetings are open meetings for any club member who may wish to attend

Mentoring New Members

Bob has taken on the responsibility of Mentoring Bill who was inducted into Rotary and our club on June 29th. What’s Mentoring all about anyway? Let’s review the process involved in becoming a Sunrise Rotarian:
  1. The first step occurs when a member sponsor (that was Bob) completes a “New Member Proposal Form on behalf of the prospective new member (that was Mike)
  2. Next the Membership Proposal goes through several approval steps (the Board and then the Membership)
  3. When the approval process is complete the Prospective Member reads through, either on line or by hard copy an “Obligations of Membership” Power Point that outlines the Service opportunities and both the service and financial responsibilities entailed in being a Sunrise Rotarian
  4. If the prospective member is comfortable with all of the obligations of membership he or she completes the Information Form and Induction into our club follows.
  5. The new member is assigned a Mentor and it is the Mentors responsibility to be available as a Rotary resource person.
  6. Finally the Mentor will assist the new member in becoming engaged in club activities and opportunities

Trivia

Here David presents DG Bob and Jan with our “Speakers Certificate”. The Trivia Question of the Week is; what reward did Bob receive for being our guest speaker this morning?

Program

For the benefit of our new members; it is the custom in Rotary for the new District Governor to visit and speak to each Rotary club in their District. Bob and Jan Martin will visit all 88 Clubs in District 5020 between July and December. This morning it was our turn and we welcomed District Governor Bob and Jan Martin

Bob opened his presentation praising Rotary President Ray Klinginsmith adoption of the 2010-11 slogan Building Communities, Bridging Continents as being eminently appropriate for the work Rotary does; he also voiced support for the RI Presidents description of “Cowboy Logic” that has application to Rotarians and Rotary Clubs:
  1. Take pride in your work;
  2. Get the job done;
  3. Talk less, say more.

On PolioPlus Bob said that in 1 to 3 years we will see our last case of Polio and 3 years after that the world will be declared Polio Free. What a testimonial that will be for Rotary; what a wonderful accomplishment. Bob suggests that perhaps Rotary’s focus after Polio should be the provision of clean water world wide. As a Physician he sees the availability of clean water as the best vehicle for ridding the world of many of the water born diseases now plaguing the third world.

On monitoring our hours that we as individual Rotarians log as we do Rotary related activity Bob recognized our clubs resistance to the idea and asked us to re-consider our decision. Bob’s thesis is that we as Rotarians aren’t good at telling our communities what we do and in particular how much we do for Rotary and therefore, by recording the time we spend doing the work of Rotary and communicating that to non Rotarians, we may change the image people have of Rotary and Rotarians.
He also said that individual Rotarians, if they wish, may monitor and report to the District via email.

On the District Governor’s Projects of Choice for this Rotary year:
  1. Clean water is Bob’s priority so this year he is offering a Sanitation and clean water award in the name of Floyd Olsen a Past 5020 DG and an RI Governor and the award will go to a club in the District that embarks on a Sanitation and Clean Water Project
  2. Bob is challenging clubs in District 5020 to achieve 20% attendance at the 2011 District Conference to be held in Tacoma on June 3,4,5. That’s 6 Sunrise Rotarians to Tacoma in June 2011 – Pat and I will be attending – Anyone else?

Bob awarded Ed with a Rotary shirt that has the Rotary Wheel with the inscription “The Best Gear in Town”, a nice gesture, thanks David and Bob

Spotlight on Mike Haas

Not too many people get to be inducted by a District Governor; however, Mike managed expert timing of his entry into Rotary. I’m sure Mike was inspired by DG Bob’s eloquent description of what membership in Rotary means and what the responsibilities of Rotary membership entail.

Mike’s Mentor will be his sponsor Allan Gannon and it will be Allan’s job to shepherd Mike over the next few months. However, Allan reminds us that we all have a responsibility to be there for Mike.Welcome to our Club and to Rotary Mike
