It’s with sorrow that we learned this morning of the passing of President Ken’s father. Ken and Dallas we extend our sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. Doug included mention of your father and your family in this mornings Invocation

District Learning and Training Assembly Feb 20 & 21 in Port Angeles
The DLTA, held each year in February is really the first function of the 2010-11 Rotary Year and the first function at which the District Governor Elect organizes and presides. A big part of the Program is directed at President Elects and serves as a lead up to PETS which follows the weekend of March 5th - 7th in Seattle.

District Governor Elect Bob Martin and David posed for Scuttlebutt prior to a working session for President Elects on Saturday afternoon. Good luck Bob and David as you lead us into the next Rotary year.
In addition to President Elect Sessions, District Trainer Norm Watts and his team organized, in Scuttlebutts opinion the best ever DLTA, from the standpoint of the breadth of programming and the quality of the presentations.Well done Norm

Doug and Norm pose for Scuttlebutt prior to a session Doug attended that was called “Know more about your Rotary World”.

David’s synopsis of the weekend in Port Angeles:
Great weekend for a cruise on the M.V. Coho to Port Angeles for the District Leadership Training Assembly……sunshine, warmth, wonderful views and a great group of some 400 Rotarians from Port Hardy to Longview Washington. Fun, fellowship and learning new Rotary initiatives enjoyed by all. DLTA is an opportunity for incoming officers and directors to get up to speed for their particular roles in the approaching new Rotary year. Seminars led by well prepared Rotarians were designed for treasurers, secretaries, membership, international, Foundation, community service, public relations directors and presidents elect. Ed was a lead presenter to several Foundation sessions of some 70 attendees each with an assist in one case from David. Doug Arbo, Larry and David had signed up for sessions of interest to them in their roles responsible for Club Service Director, Membership Director and President respectively. Incoming Directors Stuart (International), George (Public Relations), Gerry (Community Service), Bob Brown (Vocational) weren’t able to attend but are either p to speed or will become so in other ways. For incoming presidents topics included planning, key dates, involving members, delegating, changes coming for Foundation, club leadership plan and an introduction to the three day President elect training at a Sea-Tac airport hotel in two weeks….more fun and learning for David…..does it ever end? Stay tuned as we share pertinent info to the club in the lead-up to the new Rotary year starting July 1, 2010.

Board Meeting February 16th

Treasurer Peter Reported:

  1. A term deposit for 18 months at 1.4% has been purchased with the funds we have set aside for repairs to Rotary House.
  2. The club account balance is $3,569 after the Bukati cheques clear.
  3. We have $9,600 in the charities account.
  4. To access the complete Financial Report go to “Forums/Feb 16” on the Club website.

Community Services Director Allan reported:
  1. RYLA selection is proceeding and once the candidate it selected we will need to pay thetuition. The tuition fee is $US325 and is in the budget (no motion required) Allan refered to George's suggestion that the Vocational Service committee should take this on in the future.
  2. Young Life Society: Doug Lochhead spoke to us recently. The committee wanted a
better understanding of their program before recommending financial support for their
work and asked him to speak to the club. The committee would like to support their
work with $400 although this is not in the budget. There was a motion approving this.
  3. Gifts of $500 each to QBMS lunch and the St Stephen's lunch program are going ahead. This was provided for in the budget (no motion required).
  4. President Ken referred to the discussion at our last meeting about reducing the budget
allocation for Community Service. Allan confirmed that these amounts fit within that
    budget reduction.

Under New Business:
  1. Club letterhead. The existing letterhead is expensive to use as it colours the whole page blue. David has a letterhead version with less colour that he will upload to the web site for club use including a version for the society.
  2. Fundraising ideas:
Ken lead a discussion of various fund raising ideas that came from the Club Assembly this
    morning. The conclusions reached were:
    1. Ken will ask Jim Lynch to ask Sea Side Cruisers whether a beer garden is possible at
Show and Shine on June 20.
    2. Smoothies at Fire and Ice: Ken will check with Doug Arbo.
    3. Allen Ball is asked to see if we can do Smoothies (and hot dogs) at Family Day.
    4. A garage sale was also favourably considered as an alternative to these, but their is no
    one selected to lead it.
    5. Larry Mix also talked about doing a night golf tournament which he has done in the past successfully. Larry will talk to the Memorial Golf Club to see if they would be
    interested.

Peter reports that our Storage Shed is now operational, although exterior staining is still to be done. The shed looks very secure with a sturdy door well done Peter

Rotary Moment

Today’s Rotary Moment was all about Doug Sly because if you want to know what Rotary’s all about you need go no further than Doug who exemplifies:

  1. Service above Self;
  2. The Four Way Test;
  3. Plus lots of grit, determination and tenacity to see tasks through
  4. These attributes describe the Reverend Doug Sly to a tee.

Doug initiates the Bukati Latrine Project during this meeting held earlier in the year. At that point Doug had a commitment of $1000 from our club towards a Project goal of $14,000. He knew that a District Matching Grant was a long shot because of the first come first served District policy; we were very late getting into the lineup for District funds. Here’s where the grit, determination and tenacity came into play: Doug prepared a Power Point and he, David and Charles approached the Mid Island WCS group and most of the Clubs within WCS and visits were arranged and the outcome was generous support following the visits plus a $2500 District Simplified Grant and presto the funds were in hand and construction begun on 18 Latrines in Bukati.
Doug’s Legacy, Scuttlebutt hopes, will be a greater commitment to International causes, to the Mid Island World Community Service group and this Legacy was perhaps best expressed in this mornings Invocation delivered by Doug: – ”We are grateful that we are privileged to live, work and play in a land of plenty and not only to enjoy the fruits of our labour but also the multitude of opportunities we have to grasp the hand that need holds out”. Let the multitude of opportunities that we have to reach out to the less fortunate be the Legacy that Doug leaves with us.

Of course there’s that other side of the Reverend Doug, the one with the twinkle in his eye.
Best wishes Doug and Dorothy, enjoy your new home in Brentwood and come back and visit on the occasional Tuesday morning.

Program

Shelter Box Canada

Rotarian Jerry Feniak from the Strathcona Sunrise Rotary Club in Courtenay was our speaker this morning. Jerry is a Shelter Box volunteer and as such has been through a very intensive training programme held in Cornwall UK.
The Shelter Box movement is the child of Tom Henderson, a Brit and a member of the Helston Lizard Rotary Club. Here’s some of the Shelter Box information that Jerry shared with us regarding the recent Haitian efforts:
  1. The first 12 tents that landed became a hospital;
  2. 200,000 families were homeless
  3. 80,000 Haitians have moved into 8,200 Boxes thus far
  4. 43% or 3500 of those boxes have come from Canada
  5. 5000 additional boxes will be arriving before the end of February, that’s accommodation for an additional 48,000 people.
  6. Time is critical for Haitians as the rainy season will begin in April

David presents Jerry with his PolioPlus Certificate.
Finally, one of the interesting aspects of the Shelter Box Program is the role played by Rotary. Shelter Box receives no funding from RI, rather the support and funding is Rotary club driven; it’s Rotary clubs around the world that Tom Henderson calls the 32,000 Branch Offices of Shelter Box.

Spotlight on Rotary and Rotarians

Our Club in 2015;Whats our Vison
Last week we looked at Club attributes, this week let’s look at: International Service
Here’s our International Service vision for 2015:
1. In 2015 we will have successfully applied for a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation thus receiving 3:1 funding to complete an International project. There are three levels of Grants available to Rotary clubs:
  1. District Simplified Grants provide a maximum of $2500 from the District. We have successfully applied for 3 DSG’s.
  2. District Matching Grant’s provide $5000 in matching District Funds and must be applied to an International Project. This should be our next goal and to do so we will need an International club to partner with.
  3. Global Grants provide $3 for every $1 contributed by the host club and the project must be focused in one of the 6 areas of concentration that have been established by the Foundation. Our experience administering a District Matching Grant is an essential preliminary to applying for a Global Grant.

    2. By 2015 we will have identified a specific geographic area of focus and will base our Projects on the needs of that particular geographic area.

    3. Finally and as an extension of #2 we will have members on the ground and involved in our Project (s).
