Scooter For Brady

Brady wheels down Moilliet Street in Parksville!
Brady Reaume a Charter member of our club and wife Patty has recently moved; Brady into Cokely Manor and Patty into the adjacent Arrowsmith Lodge.
Brady has been plagued with mobility problems so he has had difficulty getting around – but not anymore. Needless to say Brady is thrilled to be mobile again.
The Scooter was owned by William Brown, a long time Qualicum Beach resident, who was failing and has since passed away. Mr. Brown had contacted Ian Lindsay and Ian suggested donating the Scooter to the QB Sunrise Society. Peter had the Scooter assessed and the Brown estate received a Tax Receipt of $2000. So the Society now owns the Scooter and its on loan to Brady.

Peter, John and David were on hand to present Brady with the keys to the Scooter. There advice to Brady – Don’t do wheelies on the sidewalk and don’t talk on the cell phone while driving.
One Sunrise Shelter Box on the ground and five more on the way
Haiti has received 7000 ShelterBoxes so far; 1000 ShelterBoxes sponsored through ShelterBox Canada are on the way right now.

Rotary Moment

Allan chose as his Rotary Moment topic the Rotary Wheel Logo
- In 1915, Montague Baer, an Engraver, created a wagon wheel as the first Logo.
- In 1922, responding to the idea that Rotary needed a Logo that was more representative of power and action, the Wheel was changed to incorporate 24 cogs and six spokes.
- Then in 1923, the Key Way was added thus enabling a shaft to be added to better depict the concept of the application of the power generated by the cogs – driving the world to achieve some positive good.
Doug put on his Fire and Ice Hat and requested volunteers for the May 1st event. They need people to monitor barricades – he says it’s an opportunity to promote Membership – contact Doug if you’re available.

Spotlight on Rotary and Rotarians
The Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise in 2015 - what’s our collective vision? Over the next several weeks let’s look at some of the individual Vision statements that came out of our Future Vision Exercise in a little more detail.
Under the heading “Club Attributes” in 2015 we want to be a club that will be:
- A club of 40 – 45 members. – we have achieved a head count of 33 a couple of times in the past 3 or 4 years but have not been able to sustain that number. Since 2005-06 our record of acquiring new members has been excellent, in fact we led the District in 2 of those years. However our record of keeping members has been abysmal, particularly our record of keeping our female members, who have left our club in droves. The question that has to be asked is: what is it about our club and our meetings that turn women away?
- A diverse mixture of talents, 50% retired and 50% working. - Presently the ratio is 61% retired and 39% working.
- Have great programming at regular meetings. – What factors need to be considered to ensure interesting programmes? Are we there now? Is our programming female friendly?
- 45% of our membership will be women , in a club of 40 that’s 18 women – we have a long way to go to achieve that attribute, we’re at 11% currently. How do we attract more women into our club? The question has to be asked, do we really want more women or are the 89% happy with the status quo?
- We will successfully have attracted young business men and women members. – Currently the most successful “recruiters” of new members are retired Rotarians – Stuart and Ron come to mind. Our “worker bees“have not been sterling recruiters so something has to change
