Around Rotary’s World

Sakuji Tanaka will lead Rotary in 2012-13

Sakuji Tanaka, a member of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan, was elected president of Rotary International for 2012-13 by delegates during the fourth plenary session at the 2011 RI Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
"It is my honor to accept the nomination to serve as president of Rotary International," said Tanaka. "Since I joined Rotary, I have embraced every new challenge of Rotary service. To me, challenge is a very important word. It inspires us. It also helps us to be and to do our best. It allows us to bring out our fullest potential."
Tanaka encouraged Rotarians to help Rotary reach its potential by finishing the job of polio eradication and using the organization's strengths to enhance its ability to "do good in the world."
He said Rotarians share a responsibility to make Rotary clubs stronger by attracting quality members and ensuring that every club meeting is productive and meaningful. He also called upon clubs to make an action plan to bring in younger members.
"We need to stop talking about this. Instead, why don't we just do it!" he said.

Rotary Moment

Derek chose as his Rotary Moment topic Rotoract and Interact; the point that Derek emphasized was how important youth is to an aging Rotary organization. Derek’s suggestion was that our club should be engaging students at KSS and assisting them to form a Rotoract Club.

Rotary International has recognized the importance of focusing on youth in Rotary by creating a Fifth Avenue of Service called “Future Generations” which brings all of Rotary’s youth initiatives under one umbrella and gives Rotary youth an equal place at Rotary's table.

Our District recently endorsed a Fifth Avenue of Service and DG Bob Martin has followed up by appointing Mark Hoppen from the Rotary Club of Gig Harbor Midday as our New Generations District Chair.

Announcements

President David asked us to include, in our thoughts during this mornings Invocation, the Hadikin family who lost a son and brother in a tragic logging accident last week. We extend our sympathy to the Hadikin family and especially to Amy and Pamela who are former members of our club.

Echo Players production of “Over the River and Through the Woods” which opened last Wednesday evening was very entertaining, however, David announced that 40 tickets went unsold, that’s $400 that could have gone into our Charities Account. David suggested we need to take a second look at this event as a fundraiser.

Allen thanked the many volunteers who turned out on Sunday for Family Days. The crew cooked up 50 Hamburgers, 80 Smokies, and 144 Hot Dogs and we realized a profit of $700. Well done everyone.

Doug had the sign up sheet for our Installation ceremony on June 28th. The cost will be $35 per person, including gratuity; drinks are extra. We’ll meet at the Thallasa Restaurant, no host bar at 5:30, dinner at 6:30.

Trivia

Now we know, thanks to Sgt. Kim and keeper of the potty Derek that an oxter is an armpit, however it cost our table a dollar each to find out.

Stephen and Shurli served up another great breakfast. There going to be in Vegas for our meeting June 14 so we’ll have to fend for ourselves. Shurl was heard to suggest that we might want to contribute some Happy Dollars to swell their Las Vegas Pot.

Program

This mornings speaker was Glynn Currie a member of the Lantzville Rotary Club and Team Leader of the Districts Vocational Training Team that will travel to the Philippines in July.

The Vocational Training Team (VTT) replaces the old Group Study Exchange Program. The change is not only a change in name it’s a change in emphasis that reflects Rotary’s Future Vision Plan. A VTT under the Future Vision Plan must focus on one of the 6 areas of concentration. In the Philippine exchange the focus is literacy and all members of the team are experienced educators. While in the Philippines from July 7 through Aug 5 they have a busy schedule meeting with the members of the Philippine team in District 3770 and other teachers and schools in the District. The 4 team members and Glynn are very experienced teachers and each member brings a unique skill set and focus to the team. The teams’ challenge will be the teaching of elementary school science; providing teachers in the schools they visit with innovative techniques and strategies; no easy task given the limited resources they’ll find in the schools they visit.

Twenty children will be immunized against Polio in Glynn’s name; Thank you Glynn
