Around Rotary’s World

Former Rotary Exchange Student now serves in The Hague

Rotary experiences twice helped Ryan Carrier discover new cultures and enrich his education in a journey that led him to become a war crimes prosecutor for the United Nations. Originally from White Rock, BC, Carrier’s first Rotary experience was in 1989, when the Rotary Club of White Rock selected him as a Rotary Youth Exchange student. He lived for a year in Vetlanda, Sweden, where he attended high school, became fluent in Swedish, and grew close to his host family, a bond that continues to this day.
Since 2008, Carrier, 38, has worked as a legal officer for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague. This ad hoc UN tribunal deals with crimes against humanity and war crimes that happened in that region after 1991.
Carrier is currently prosecuting three Croatian army generals for crimes alleged to have been committed during Operation Storm in August 1995. Then, more than 100,000 ethnic Serbs were driven out of Croatia in what Carrier describes as the largest case of ethnic cleansing during the Balkan wars.
“Ethnic cleansing is not limited to entering a town and killing everyone; it also encompasses illegal acts whereby someone attempts to reconfigure the demographics of a certain area, driving out certain ethnicities in order to ‘cleanse’ the area,” says Carrier.

Progress for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge for Polio Eradication

As of 28 February, Rotarians have raised about $114.5 million for Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. These contributions will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.
As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high.

Membership Director Pat Says:- “Just Do It…. By April 6th”

April 6th is the date that Pat wants all of us to have at least one name of a potential Rotarian that each of us will be inviting to a special meeting to be called early in May. The purpose of that meeting is to provide information to prospective members about Rotary and about our Club. This will lead to an Induction Ceremony planned for our May 25th regular meeting at which time Pat wants to see at least 4 women inducted into our Club. Membership Matters – All You Have To Do Is Ask!

Announcements

ADG Michael had several announcements from the District
  1. Rotary Foundation Grant Management Seminars are being scheduled throughout the District and the most convenient for our representatives to attend will be at VIU in Nanaimo at 9 am on Saturday May 1. PE David and International Director Elect Stuart will be attending but David would like a broader representation from our club.
  2. The District Governor will visit our club July 27. Bob Martin has asked that we prepare a display of our crowning achievements over the last couple of years, either as a Power Point or as a pictorial display.
  3. Michael has been instrumental in speaking on our behalf to DGE Bob Martin in support of David’s Presidency in 2010-11. Because David was unable to attend PETS it did create some complications for him and us with respect to his eligibility to serve as President – however, this has been rectified and David will assume the position on July 1. Thank you Michael for your intervention in this matter.
  4. Michael reminded President Ken that Presidential Citation information is due before the end of March.

President Ken and International Director Elect Stuart attended the WCS Workshop at UVI on the weekend.

Allan and Lauren Gannon will be leading a session scheduled for Tuesday evening March 30 that will develop a Vision Statement for our Club. Allan would like broad club participation for the session so highlight March 30, 7 pm on your Blackberry or IPod.

Do you know that 11,000 British Columbians live with Parkinson’s disease? The Parkinson’s Society of BC Oceanside Support Group meets at 2 pm on the 1st Tuesday of the month at the Presbyterian Church on Church Road in Parksville. For information call Stuart Jackson; 250-594-5955.

Allen and Peter have finished installing the shelving in our Storage Shed and quite a lot of the odds and sods that was stored in the Rotary House Lockers or in Allen’s and/or Peter’s basements are now secured in the Shed; that’s a job well done Allen and Peter

Our Club moved from our former meeting location, which was Eaglecrest Golf Course, during Jim’s year as President in 2006-07, to our present location at Rotary House in the Fall of 2006. Since that time Malcolm C Brown, better known as Kim, has arrived at 6 am each Tuesday morning to get the place ready for the rest of us who begin to arrive sometime after 6:30. Kim has had help of course but he has been the one who, with the exception of his sojourns in Ibiza from time to time, has always been the one that each of the 4 Presidents since 2006 have counted on to have our meeting place ready for breakfast. As one of those Presidents, and on behalf as well of Jim, Jean-Marc and Ken I wanted to do this for Kim to show our appreciation for many, many Tuesday morning jobs well done. Please everyone, join me in acknowledging Kim Brown, our newest Paul Harris Fellow

Program

Sandy Machan Coordinates the Oceanside Rainbows Program and was present this morning to accept our contribution to that organization, a cheque for $400, and also to tell us a little bit about Rainbows.
Rainbows operates out of Knox United Church in Parksville; Knox donates the space and the program is run entirely by volunteers. There are two – twelve week courses each year; September to December and January to April. There is no cost to participate and participants are put into age appropriate small groups, which are peer support groups that encourage the children to express their emotions.
When a change takes place in a family: death; divorce; separation or; abandonment it has a profound effect on all members of the family. Children who are impacted by this change possibly don’t have the life skills to deal with the conflicting emotions and grief. Rainbows provide a trusting and safe environment, with the support of trained, caring and compassionate adults, for children to express their feelings and to work through their grief.

Community Service Committee Representative Doug Arbo presents Sandy with a cheque for $400. As well 20 children will be immunized for Polio in Sandy’s name. Well done Rainbows, Sunrise Rotarians salute the good work you do in Oceanside
