Around Rotary’s World

Rotary First Harvest

Rotary First Harvest founded in 2003 by the Rotary Club of Klamath County, Oregon and became a District 5110 Project (mid & southern Oregon and northern California) in 2006.

Rotary First Harvest networks throughout Oregon and northern California to form partnerships with commercial food growers, donors, trucking companies, food distribution centers, Rotary clubs, volunteers and others to locate and move fresh produce to those who need it. RFH uses the power and network of Rotary to identify food sources, arrange transportation, and work with local organizations to get food that would otherwise be wasted to the existing distribution centers.

Rotary First Harvest networks to achieve the mission of alleviating hunger in their district by providing fresh produce, meat and other staples to existing food banks. RFH collects and coordinates distribution of food that will not make it to market and gets it to the children, their families, the elderly and disabled who need it.

Rotary First Harvest is a nonprofit, non-partisan corporation established for charitable and educational purposes. Fresh food is collected and distributed without cost to community food banks, feeding program operators, and other similar organizations. Its mission is to feed the hungry with freshly grown and/or surplus, nutritious produce and to use existing distribution and transportation systems while maintaining minimal operating overhead.

RFH Projects include:
  1. Community Gardens
  2. The Salvage of commercially non- viable fruits & vegetables
  3. A Meat program
  4. Food Recovery - Over 700,000 pounds of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat to local
food banks, pantries and kitchens since 2003
  5. 22 Rotary clubs in District 5110 participate

Ageing and Dementia
Ronine Sharp R. N. describes herself as a “Memory Nurse” and spoke to us this morning about dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Qualicum Beach and Parksville are one and two as having the oldest average age of any community in Canada; and Sidney is number three. In these Island communities and across Canada people now are expecting to live well into their 80’s and 90’s. So what do we need to do to maintain our memory because Ronine says, “when you lose your memory you lose your life”. Our memory is our identity, it’s who we are.

Ronine says, we can't change the fact that we’re all aging and will probably live well into our 80’s and 90’s but we can learn to age well. So how do we age well?
  1. We stay active – join Rotary
  2. We challenge our brain
  3. We stay physically active – walk, cycle, exercise
  4. We laugh and play
  5. We maintain relationships
  6. We make love……whoopee!

A Senior Moment

A Senior Moment .....

Hospital regulations require a wheel chair for patients being discharged. However, while working as a student nurse, I found one elderly gentleman already dressed and sitting on the bed with a suitcase at his feet, who insisted he d idn't need my help to leave the hospital.
After a chat about rules being rules, he reluctantly let me wheel him to the elevator.
On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
'I don't know,' he said. 'She's still upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown.'- thanks Kim

Taiwan or Thialand?

Derek emailed to gently remind me that Bangkok is in Thailand not Taiwan and that's where the exchange student who arrives for a year at KSS is from - could my error have been caused by another senior moment?
