QB SUNRISE
SCUTTLEBUTT

The QB Sunrise Scuttlebutt is a weekly publication that highlights the activities of the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise.

Around Rotary’s World
District 5020 and the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise Doing Good In The World

Our International Service committee of Director Doug Sly and committee members Derek, David, John and Charles had been in communication with Dr. Elizabeth Dewey, who in concert with her church in Ontario had been working with and funding a project at the Bukati school in Kenya. Initially the intent of Doug and his committee was to develop a Host Club relationship with the Kakamaga Rotary Club in Kenya in an attempt to apply for either a District or a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant in support of a project that Dr. Dewey had identified.
As things unfolded reality set in to change our focus
- The Kakamaga Rotary Club was already the Host club for 5 other Rotary projects and under Rotary Foundation rules was, therefore, not permitted to take on another Project.
- The Committee discovered that the process of successfully applying for matching grant funding was not something that happened over night. We learned that to successfully apply for and receive either a District Matching Grant ($2 for every $1 we contribute) or a Rotary Foundation Grant ($3for every $1 we contribute) we have to have our “ducks in a row” a year in advance.
- About the time that we realized the implications of #1 and #2 above we were advised by Dr. Dewey that the Bukati School was facing an immediate emergency; the school had been advised by the Kenyan Government that unless Latrines were built the school would be forced to close, apparently the existing sanitation standards at the School were abysmal.
- The Committee subsequently made the decision to take on the task of supporting the construction of 18 Latrines at a total cost of $15,000CAN.
Promoting the Bukati Latrine Project
- Doug and wife Dorothy developed a Power Point presentation.
- Doug followed up with a presentation to the Mid Island World Community Service group, of which we are a member; Doug’s presentation was well received and a commitment of financial support was forthcoming.
- Subsequently arrangements were made and committee members spoke to Rotary Clubs from Salt Spring Island to Courtenay.
- An application for a District Simplified Grant of $2500 was submitted and approved by the District.
- Our club matched the $2500 District Simplified Grant; the MIWCS contributed $2600 and other mid island Clubs contributed $3100.
- The total of $10,700 was raised by our committee with the balance of $4300 contributed as a result of Dr. Dewey’s efforts within her church.

Not the most glamorous project perhaps but none the less we made a difference – the school remains open; children continue to learn; and who knows how much of a difference one or more of those children will make during their lifetime? Throw even a small stone in a pond and you’ll generate waves that will travel to the periphery

Rotary Moment

Kim was nostalgic this morning, perhaps it has something to do with his Anniversary;. Kim joined the Rotary Club of Saskatoon North in 1986. Then following a move to Spain and the Island of Ibiza where he and Jill owned and operated the Hotel Ca’s Catala in the small village of Santa Eulalia del Rio, Kim joined the Rotary Club of St Eulalia, Ibiza. While he was a member of the Ibiza Club he and Jill traveled to India with other Rotarians and while in Calcutta volunteered in a street medical clinic. Kim has been a member of QB Sunrise since 2002 and a Rotarian for 24 years.

Trivia
While back in his old stomping grounds of High River AB recently our man Ron Stothers was taken for a ride on this bi-plane. That in itself was enough to make this edition of Scuttlebutt; however, the bi-plane ride story became more newsworthy when Ron tried to claim a make-up in lieu of the ride; what cheek.
The Tirvia Question of the Week – "What Sunrise Rotarian tried to claim a make-up from a bi-plane ride?"
Visioning, Part 5
Lauren Gannon emphasized to us repeatedly this morning “Be specific – spell out your goal; then – identify what strategies you’ll employ and when (give it a time frame) and finally – how will you measure whether or not you’ve achieved your goal”
I was in the Communication group with Amy and President Elect David and our focus was on Internal Communication and we really did achieve something this morning. We identified some pretty fundamental communication goals for this next Rotary year; we determined what strategies we would use to achieve the goals and when these strategies were going to happen and finally we identified how we were going to measure the achievement of our goals. We have more work to do but this morning was a good start, in fact our first strategy is contained in this edition of Scuttlebutt – read the Trivia Question.
Our Club’s Annual Fees
Club Treasurer Peter Kellas (seen in a more frivolous pose) has announced that Club Fees are due and payable on or before July1st which is the start of the next Rotary year.

- Our District 5020 Fees are $57 and that covers the operating expenses of our District
