QB SUNRISE
SCUTTLEBUTT

The QB Sunrise Scuttlebutt is a weekly publication that highlights the activities of the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise.

Around Rotary’s World

Adopt a Village believes that to successfully give the poor the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty all three major causes of poverty need to be addressed; Adopt a Village uses the metaphor of a Three Legged Stool

The three legs of the Stool are:
  1. Health
  2. Hunger, and
  3. Education

The three legged stool needs all three legs intact and if one leg is missing the stool loses it’s stability and topples.

Heres how it Works
Adopt a Village is a concept that attacks all three problems of poverty in one project for a single group of people – A Village
  1. First Clubs in third-world countries identify villages that suffer from poverty.
  2. Then they do a needs assessment of the village in cooperation with the villagers themselves and work up a project for the village that address the needs of the villagers to lift themselves out of poverty.
  3. The projects must include all three legs of the stool; Health, Hunger and Education.
  4. Clubs such as our club or WCS groups such as our Mid Island group can then access the Adopt a Village website at http://www.toadoptavillage.org/index.shtml , make contact with the Host (3rd World) Rotary club(s) and become involved in the project for the village in question.

Trivia

If you know this man and can identify him as our Club Service Director this Rotary year you’ll have answered the Trivia question correctly

Program

Dave McDowell is the chief Administrator of Arrowsmith Lodge and Copley Manor on Moilliet St. in Parksville; Fred Pearson is Vice Chair of the Arrowsmith Board of Directors

Arrowsmith Lodge is a non-profit community driven facility providing excellent residential care that has been in operation for over 40 years. Ten years ago the facility underwent a complete renovation and modernization; Copley Manor, an assisted living facility was built at that time as well. As well as providing residential and assisted living services Arrowsmith also offers a Day Care program that Busses 10 people each weekday to Arrowsmith Lodge for daycare programs.

The Arrowsmith Mission “is to provide excellent residential care” and Dave say’s they are one of just a very few that operate as a “Social Model” facility, meaning that they don’t just treat health related issues but also address the social needs of their residents. This says Dave is “the” challenge because their residents are lonely, their helpless and their board. These factors are addressed by a dedicated and caring staff who do their best to address the social needs of their residents.

The Board says Fred is facing ongoing budget challenges with increases in costs caused by year over year inflation not being funded in this time of severe Provincial restraint. As well Capital costs are also not being funded.

Dave indicated that they have an immediate need to purchase 10 Slings which are used to lift residents who are not able to move on their own. Each sling costs between $500 and $600. Is this something that our Community Service Committee might be able to address?

Spotlight on Scuttlebutt

In the nine editions of Scuttlebutt since May 1 Scuttlebutt is averaging 56 hits per week with three issues in the 70’s two in the 40’s and the rest in the 60’s.These numbers possibly indicate that we may have regular readers of Scuttlebutt beyond our club. I have received feedback from a Calgary Rotarian, a Rotarian from Ontario and a Rotarian from Australia who had read one or more editions of Scuttlebutt.

Based on the Survey we conducted in late May you have indicated by your responses that:
  1. only one of you never reads Scuttlebutt
  2. 81%, of you re-read Scuttlebutt, usually looking for specific information that you remember being in an issue.
  3. You like the Photos, Club Announcements, Meeting Program Summaries and Spotlight Specials
  4. Around Rotary’s World has only Moderate or less attraction to 85% of readers. I must confess this cut me to the quick because it’s the area that requires the most research.
  5. When asked what you’d like to see more of, one of you indicated “How other clubs fund activities” and another respondent wanted sample “sweat equity projects at home and abroad” and one of you wanted more on “local events”.

Where do we go from here? Well we’ll continue to do the things that you’ve indicated you enjoy but we’ve also taken a second look at “Around Rotary’s World” and will begin to include information about Rotary that might have more application and relevance for our club. Last week’s topic on SCAW and this weeks Adopt a Village article are an example of things happening somewhere in Rotary’s world that might have some application for us here in Oceanside.

Finally, if you provide feedback to me about what you like and what you don’t like I can respond accordingly. Click on the “Add New Comment” option that you’ll find below the Scuttlebutt Banner and let me know what you’re thinking.
