Service Above SelfThe Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do ............ 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? ![]() ![]() The Gannon's President Allan and First Lady Lauren ![]() The "A" Team - Our 2011-12 Sunrise Officers and Directors Announcements
![]() Changeover Ceremony June 28, 2011
![]() Director of Club Service, event organizer and our Master of Ceremonies Doug Arbo presided and called on Allen Ball to say the Invocation. ![]() ![]() Sunrise President David Lavalley presented outgoing Assistant District Governor Michael Proctor a Polio Certificate and thanked him for his three years of service to our club and to Area 2A. ![]() Michael presented Scuttlebutt Editor Ed Fougner and faithful spouse, proofreader and Assistant Editor Pat with the District Award Newsletter award for clubs under 49 members. Yeah Scuttlebutt! ![]() David did a great job of reviewing the highlights of his 2010-11 year as President and went through the Sunrise Roster alphabetically thanking:
![]() David had a very special award for Mike Haas, an award that Scuttlebutt hopes will become an annual tradition. Mike received ”Rookie of The Year’ recognition for his tireless participation and effort at just about every activity and event in our 2010-11 year. Congratulations Mike! Rotarian of the Year – The Jean-Marc Fortier Award ![]() For the benefit of our newer members let me introduce you to Jean-Marc Fortier, Rotarian and Gentle Man. Jean-Marc was inducted into our club in the fall of 2001, he and wife Holly had just relocated to Qualicum from Prince George establishing a very successful Digital Mapping Business here in QB. Jean-Marc was a native of Quebec City and was a passionate Nordique fan. He loved a party and could usually be found near the centre of the fun; he was a mover and a shaker, an idea man, who was at the centre of many of the innovative things that happened in our club; he was also a doer, someone that could be counted on to always show up for Roses or to paint the wall on 2nd avenue after the fire or to participate in a work party at Rotary House; in fact we didn’t really appreciate how much he did for the club both out front and behind the scenes until he was gone. He was elected as our President Elect in December of 2007; in the late winter and early spring of 2008 he was suffering recurring headaches and in June of 2008, just before he would have become President, he was diagnosed with an untreatable brain stem tumor and he passed away in December of 2008. Our Board of the day made the decision in June of 2008, that they wanted Jean-Marc to serve as our President even if it was in name only; that year 6 members each took a 2 month term as Acting President, Jean-Marc never chaired a meeting but he remained our President throughout that 2008-09 year. The Award we created in memory of Jean-Marc was first awarded in 2009 to Ken Walker and last year Peter Kellas was the second recipient, both were worthy recipients, and both, as did Jean-Marc practice the Rotary motto of Service Above Self. ![]() Peter as the Chair of this years selection committee reviewed nominations received from members and announced Kim Brown as this years Rotarian of the Year and recipient of the Jean-Marc Fortier memorial Award. Kim first joined Rotary in 1979 as a member of the Rotary Club of Saskatoon North; following Kim and Jill’s move to Ibiza as proprietors of Cas de Catala, a Hotel in Eulalia on the Island, Kim joined the Rotary Club of Ibiza; and upon moving back to Canada and Qualicum Beach in 2002 Kim joined our Club. Kim recalls that at his first meeting of our club that he was attending as a guest, the speaker was a no show, and Kim was asked to fill in, and he graciously complied. Now that’s service above self. Kim served as our first Scuttlebutt editor and I believe Jill is credited with suggesting the name “Scuttlebutt”. Both Kim and Jill have been tireless volunteers at Garage Sales, at Roses and at a host of other activities. When we moved to Rotary House in 2006 from The Old Dutch Inn things needed to be set up and ready to go for the start of our 7 am meetings. It was Kim, who from the start arrived early to set up the tables, set the tables with cutlery and condiments, folded the napkins, arranged the chairs, and got the flags in place. For the past several years Kim has served as our Sgt. at Arms. It’s the job of the Sgt. to provide some fellowship to our meetings, Kim’s repartee each meeting morning acknowledges members for their accomplishments, he pokes a few ribs, and he welcomes guests and make potential new members feel at home. His quizzes that feature obscure questions baffle us most mornings but add many Sunrise dollars to the Potty. Kim is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a committed Rotarian and who with Jill at his side both live by the Four Way Test and both unselfishly provide service to others. Jean-Marc is nodding his head at our choice of Rotarian of the year; Congratulations Kim ![]() Secretary Ken Walker, whose job it is to keep track of members attendance extended congratulations to Allan Gannon and Peter Kellas for outstanding attendance records. Congratulations Allan and Peter ![]() ![]() ![]() District Annual Programs Chair Ed Fougner awarded Paul Harris Pins to David Lavalley, Allan Gannon and Kim Brown; Congratulations David, Allan and kim The evening wasn’t all about serious stuff, Doug and his Club Service Committee henchmen, all with tongues firmly placed in cheeks, served up 10 funny but appropriate awards ![]() Mike Haas received the Golden Spike Award for his contribution in laying the new floor at Rotary House. ![]() Ken Walker received the Life Ring Award to accompany him on his next off shore expedition. ![]() Doug raked up the Pooh Award for Stuart Jackson, a tribute to Stuart’s “Outhouse Production Company” ![]() Ed received a Press Pass that will enable him to gain access to all Vancouver Canuck games. ![]() David, who was renowned this past year for arriving at the eleventh hour, received an Alarm Clock. ![]() Longtime Treasurer Peter Kellas received a Pen with both red and black ink and an eraser. Probably something Peter will pass on to Hugh ![]() Kim received a box of Smarties to help him dream up more obscure questions. ![]() Allen Ball received a mounted Paint Brush in recognition for his contribution to the Rotary House reno. The kicker is that the Brush can also be used for ongoing “touch ups”. ![]() Allan Gannon received the Golden Trawl Award in recognition of his contribution to the Rotary House renovation. Allan an accomplished “mudder” is the reason the walls at Rotary House are smooth and attractive. ![]() Only someone who himself cheats at golf could have dreamed up the magic golf ball that Ron presented to Doug; not that Doug couldn’t use a little magic on the golf course, with a swing like Doug’s, he needs all the help he can get. ![]() In a gesture that we all hope will become a tradition at future Changeover Ceremonies, President David presented a yellow rose to each Rotarians spouse/partner, thanking them for the contribution they make toward our club and to Rotary. Installation of Allan and his Leadership Team ![]() Assistant Governor Ed Fougner installed President Allan Gannon and the 10 Directors and Officers who with Allan form our 2011-12 leadership team
![]() For Allan, being a Rotarian is more than being a member of a Rotary club. In his inaugural address following his installation commented on what he considered to be “important Rotary business” and chose 2011-12 RI President Kalyan Banerjie’s theme “Reach Out to Embrace Humanity” the emphasis he places on The Family, Continuity, and Change. Building on the model of the Family he challenges us in our thinking and our actions to extend our experiences of family to include our fellow Rotarians, our local community, and the international community. This family emphasis resonates powerfully for me resulting from an experience early in my Rotary while attending a student exchange conference. At the closing session dinner the students from all of the nations present were piped onto the stage. Side by side each group paraded in carrying the flag of their respective country. Among the countries represented were some that just short years ago had forefathers warring with each other, killing one another. The experience moved me deeply to tears as I reflected on how powerful the worldwide family of Rotary is in creating friendships and world understanding. I realized being a Rotarian is more than being a member of a Rotary club. Continuity for President Banerjie represents maintaining the key values of Rotary and continuing to do and strengthening the things we do well. And to stay grounded with the question of why are we doing the things we are doing? Change , President Bannerjie suggests is the need to be open to new ways of seeing the world and how we might respond. In our clubs some of our established traditions may have to give way to alternate ways of doing things in particular to attract and keep new and younger members. Allan concluded, that as we launch into this new year as a club our RI president invites us to Reach “Within to Embrace Humanity”. As we do, we join the rest of the Rotary world fulfilling the Rotary Mission statement of becoming ”A worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes”. As a club we have some great projects and great teams assembled this year. We also have the advantage of a great support group in our spouses. So when we put this all together I believe we are in for a great year. Thank you all for taking on the various areas of responsibility to make it all work and come together successfully. In conclusion my wish for each of you is that at the end of day in your experience of Rotary you will have had some fun and you will be able to say “today I wrote a little line in the history of good”.

Ed, thanks for another great
Ed, thanks for another great Scuttlebutt and particularly for the comments about Jean-Marc. For the record though, Allan Gannon had the highest number of attendance credits for the year but the two Rotarians who received the only perfect attendance pins for the year (in each case their fourth in a row) were David Lavalley and Peter Kellas.
Thanks Ken, sorry Allan,
Thanks Ken, sorry Allan, David and Peter; that's the result of not taking notes and relying on memory. I also failed to acknowledge Allan's contribution in our Coats for Kids that David had mentioned in his tribute to the accomplishments of 2010-11. Sorry David and Allan.
