Around Rotary’s World

Promoting Rotary In The Workplace

Professional integrity has been central to Rotary’s identity since Paul Harris started the first Rotary club in 1905. The Rotary Code of Conduct reminds us to exemplify vocational service in our professional lives.
The Rotary Code of Conduct:-“as a Rotarian, I will:
  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities;
  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary;
  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others;
  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings;
  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations, that are useful to society;
  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community;
  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians;
  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship.”

Announcements

President Allan announced that Rotary’s Challenge for polio eradication has reached the US$200 million milestone. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded The Rotary Foundation an additional $50 million grant, which is not a challenge grant, in recognition of Rotary's early achievement of this milestone.
Congratulations are due to our Foundation Chair David Lavalley and all of our club members for achieving our club goals over the period of the Challenge; well done fellow Sunrise Rotarians.

Blake circulated the sign up sheet for Guess Who’s Coming For Dinner, scheduled for Feb. 18.

Ron asked for volunteers to work on a committee to plan a Gourmet Dinner by Giovanni and Dance fundraiser. A tentative date of March 24 was suggested and the suggested venue is the Civic Centre; stay tuned.

Induction Ceremony

AG Ed presided over the Induction Ceremony for Bill Toth. President Allan presented Bill with the New Member folder and name Badge and Sponsor Robin pinned the Rotary Pin on Bill’s lapel; Welcome to Rotary Bill and welcome to our Club

Program

Constable Pam Casey is a member of the Oceanside Detachment of the RCMP and she serves as the Oceanside School Officer and her primary responsibility is the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program or D.A.R.E.

Pam and her Lion friend “Daren” visit Grade Five students in Oceanside schools spending 8 weeks in each class, one class session each week.
The children learn about making healthy and wise decisions:
  1. About the Friends they make
  2. About Peer Pressure
  3. About ways to be in charge - being confident and “standing tall”
  4. About personal pressure situations

At the end of the 8 week program the children receive a Certificate and take part in a classroom graduation ceremony.

Another perk of the program for Pam and for the children is that the children come away from the experience with a warm and friendly feeling toward Pam and hopefully a better understanding and appreciation for the authority she represents.

Twenty children will be immunized against Polio in Pam’s name; Thank you Pam
