 Around Rotary’s World India – One Year Polio Free  Rotary club members worldwide are cautiously celebrating a major milestone in the global effort to eradicate polio. India, until recently an epicenter of the wild poliovirus, has gone one year without recording a new case of the crippling, sometimes fatal, disease. India’s last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal State on 13 January 2011. The country recorded 42 cases in 2010, and 741 in 2009. A chief factor in India’s success has been the widespread use of the bivalent oral polio vaccine, which is effective against both remaining types of the poliovirus. Another has been rigorous monitoring, which has helped reduce the number of children missed by health workers during National Immunization Days to less than 1 percent, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). January 17th Meeting Rotary Moment An example of Capacity Building that Derek used was a Mercy Ship initiative. After conducting a Dental Clinic in West Africa they decided to leave Dental equipment; a Chair plus related resources. The result was, that with this increased capacity to serve dental needs in the area, local Dentists were able to perform an additional 26,000 procedures over a 5 year period. Announcements  Ron asked us to circle Feb 18 our next Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner night. This is always a popular event, great fellowship.  President Elect Peter Kellas wants to remind all members of next year Board that the District Learning and Training Assembly (DLTA) is scheduled for the Grand Pacific Hotel in Victoria on the Saturday and Sunday, March 31 & April 1. This is an annual event designed to bring Rotary club leaders up to speed on their respective responsibilities. The Club covers Registration costs, accommodation is the responsibility of individual Rotarians. DLTA Sessions have something for everyone and include the following sessions:

Trivia  Shurl sets the standard for chic Rotarians  Pat was a minority on 1 this morning and was heard to mutter something about being a member of an old boy’s club. Program This morning was Club Assembly and we met in our various service committee groups:  Three Community Service orphans are looking forward to Director Mike Haas’ return Feb 1.  International Service continues our clubs emphasis on projects sponsored by the mid Island WCS Committee.  Club Service is planning a Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner event for Feb 18 and are also in the process of arranging a visit to the Lantzville Rotary Club.  The Vocational Service committee will be interviewing KSS student(s) for the upcoming RYLA Conference in Tacoma March 1-4.  Peter Allan and Allen discuss Rotary House and Fundraising  Spotlight on our Philippines Project  We have collaborated with the Rotary Club of Davao in the building of a Learning Center and here Davao Rotarian Mr. Wiebe and Mr. Jun-Mark the Bagobo teacher at the Learning Centre address the inauguration ceremonies that formally opened the Centre in December.  Two members of the Bagobo community accept a Sewing Machine from the Rotary Club of Davao; Sunrise Rotary contributions assisted in the purchase of the Sewing Machine.
