Around Rotary’s World

Women in Rotary

August is Membership Month so what are we doing about attracting more women into our Club; “why more women”, you say? A colleague of mine who is the Assistant Governor in Area 9A tells this story: Jerry was the President of the Shelton Skookum Club the year their club voted to include women as members; said Jerry “as a result of this decision nine men resigned their membership and were replaced by 2 new women member’s, and said Jerry those 2 new members did twice the work of the 9 members they replaced”.

In 2008-09, during Ken Neden’s year as President we went through an exercise of Visioning what we wanted our club to be by 2015.

Our Membership Vision was that by 2015 we will be a club of members diverse in talents, gender, and age; with 40+ members of which 45% are women.

That’s not an unreasonable vision!
  1. Diverse talents means more ideas, greater opportunity, greater potential;
  2. Diversity in age range provides a potential for more energy, different perspectives;
  3. Diversity in gender is fundamental because it impacts how we are perceived in the community and how we operate as a club. Look at the photo of our Executive, our 2011-12 Board - see anything missing from that photo?
  4. Finally a club of 40+ members will give us the people power to enable us to take on that elusive major fundraiser we’ve been talking about but not doing much about.

August 9th Meeting

Guests

Our guests this morning were Trevor Wicks, our speaker and Bill a visiting Rotarian from the Port Angeles Norwesters Rotary Club; Welcome Trevor and Bill

Program

Guest speaker Trevor Wicks is a passionate advocate of an integrated Arrowsmith Water Supply Utility. He describes what we have now as being fragmented and unregulated and states that for the most part the governing jurisdictions have their head’s in the sand and seem no real strategy to address the challenges and issues that exist.
He suggests that:

  1. The water supply must be sustainable;
  2. Ground water levels must not be lowered;
  3. Should not transport water from other watersheds;
  4. Should have a low dependence on external energy (e.g. for pumping)
  5. The location of wells in a catchment area is critical

Trevor maintains water supply is not a problem; with good management we have the available water. The options that exist for good water management include:
  1. Better conservation by eliminating leakage in existing systems;
  2. Direct surplus storm water into reservoirs;
  3. Utilize a 2 pipe system for grey and potable water
  4. Use elevation to provide the necessary water pressure;
  5. Utilize “Quadra sands” deposits to clarify water;
  6. Limit growth based on available water.

    Twenty Children will be immunized against Polio in Trevors name; Thank You Trevor.
