Around Rotary’s World – More on Fundraising

About Skookum Rotary Club’s OysterFest
The Skookum Rotary Club, is a District 5020 Club located in Shelton Washington. Shelton is on HWY 101 just north of Olympia and on October 2nd and3rd, 2010, the Port of Shelton Fairgrounds is a great place to be. This is the first October weekend and that means OYSTERFEST in Shelton. With the help of nearly 100 community organizations, Skookum Rotary stages its annual small town, BIG event! The gates are open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

There’s a Seafood Cook-Off

As well the two day event features:
  1. On-going free entertainment
  2. Wine tasting is provided by several Washington State Wineries
  3. Microbreweries are present to do their thing.
  4. Lot’s of Food venders attend and none may duplicate another's delicacy.
  5. The cost of admission to OysterFest is $5.00 per-person

About the Skookum Rotary Club Foundation
Many organizations support OysterFest however, OysterFest is the primary fund raising activity of the Shelton SKOOKUM Rotary Club Foundation. Skookum Rotary's earnings support the following:
  1. International Service:
Hosting inbound Rotary exchange students for their year-long stay; sponsoring local outbound Rotary Exchange Students; hosting Group Study Exchange Teams from various foreign countries for a few days of their six-week stay in our Rotary District; leading Rotary Club in the on-going effort to build and equip a hospital in Latvia (this project started with one Skookum Rotarian and is supported by Rotary Clubs in our district as well as Rotary International) and supporting Rotary International's Polio Plus program to eliminate polio worldwide.
  2. Vocational Service:
The club's Academic Excellence program serves over 500 Mason County students through programs including: Academic Excellence, Career Day, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Science Fair, Business Week, several Scholarships and participation at the New Teacher Banquet.
  3. Community Service:
Water Quality education for over 1000 Mason County Students; hosting nearly 500 fourth graders for Kid's Day at the Fairgrounds the day before; plus numerous other Community Service projects made possible by the revenue generated through OysterFest.

Would this work for our Club? It certainly has the potential to be a major fundraiser; and we do live in a prime shellfish producing area, however:
    1. We’d need the support and cooperation of Town Council, the Qualicum Beach Chamber, and the shellfish industry.
    2. We’d need a suitable outdoor venue.
    3. Finally we’d need project leadership and a time commitment from our club members.

    5. As was announced last week; the Evening club needs help in acquiring 2 or 3 more Host Families in support of their incoming Rotary Exchange Student from Thailand. The young lady will be attending KSS in Grade 12. If you are considering Hosting you should be prepared to Host for 2 – 3 months during this next school year. For more information you should call either David or Norm Watts of the Evening Club at 250-752-0929.

Peter commented on the Rotary House renovations that were obvious to us all this morning and which are a work in progress. The ceiling has been painted and the walls striped and filled ready for a base coat. Peter noted that it became obvious as the work has progressed these last few days that something also needed to be done about the floor. A representative from Castle Floors has made recommendations regarding the type of floor that would best serve our needs and Peter should be receiving a quote later today. Obviously if we decide to proceed with an upgrade to the floor we’ll need to explore sources of funding – stay tuned.

      Trivia

Who won QB Chambers “Best New Business of 2009”?

      Program

Amy and Pamela and their Mom are three reasons why eating raw foods make healthy sense. They look healthy, they feel great, and they have all lost weight since they started on a raw foods diet.

Raw foods, say’s Amy contain all of the enzymes you need to aid digestion and if you're on a raw diet you don’t need to take any dietary supplements – everything you need is in the food. Cooking food destroys much of the natural goodness found in raw foods so they don’t heat anything above 140 degrees F.

Getting started is easy said Amy:
      1. Start buying organic; there are lots of organic farmers and suppliers in our Oceanside area
      2. start by blending fruit and vegetable juices, they’ll give you a real jump start to your day
      3. Add healthier foods gradually using recipes that are available either at Rawthentic Eatery or on the web
      4. Buy the necessary equipment you need to process raw food

Rawthentic Eatery Won the 2009 New Business of the Year in Qualicum Beach so they're a good place to start for anyone thinking about “eating raw”.
      1. They provide classes;
      2. Pamela is also available for raw food coaching, helping you buy and providing suggestions regarding equipment and recipes
      3. Rawthentic Eatery is open 7 days a week and their menu contains many savory ideas

Here’s a few ideas Scuttlebutt found on the Rawauthentic website that you try out at the Eatery:

      Kaleicious Salad
Kale, and our special dressing. Contains nuts not sure if you can have it tell us what ingredient you can't have and we'll let you know if it's in it. This is one simple salad that will knock your socks off. Ultimate Favorite at the Rawthentic

      Pizza
Made with a veggie flax seed crust, this crispy flat crust is topped with our marinara sauce, yellow and red peppers, our crumbled neat balls, carmalized onions and our house dressing topped off with our nut cheese. Yummy!

      Wrap
This filling wrap is packed with greens, sprouts, red and yellow peppers, cashew hummus, Falafel Balls, Carrot or Beet (shredded), our house dressing and special sauce. The wrap is made from flaxseed, veggies and spices and if you think you would not be satisified we dare you to try it before saying anything more.

      Cheeze Cakes
These are amazing, and they don't last long. We make a variety throughout each week. Some our regulars are Berry, and Strawberry. As we move into the spring and summer we are inspired to make Pineapple, Lemon, Lime, Pomegranate and Raspberry too. Not sure about eating raw we dare you to try our cheeze cakes. Made with cashews, coconut oil, fresh fruit and/or juice, vanilla bean, lemon juice and raw agave.

Stuart presents Amy and Pamela with a PolioPlus Certificate; 20 children will be immunized against Polio in Amy and Pamela’s name

Spotlight on Rotary and Rotary House Renovation

Renovations got off to a good start on Friday morning and by that afternoon the interior walls were stripped of the vertical and horizontal plastic strips, the walls washed with TSP by Kim and rinsed clean by Doug. Ken, Peter and Ed removed screws, and filled holes.

On Monday the decision was made to remove all of the vertical plastic and to fill between the cracks of the wall panels with a plaster compound; this will give us a clean unbroken wall appearance.

Ken tapes the lights in preparation for painting the ceiling and following that the tables and chairs were set up and things cleaned in preparation for this morning’s meeting.

A good crew of nattily attired Rotarians was on hand Tuesday to apply a second coat of plaster to the panel cracks and sand in preparation for a base coat of paint on Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday will see a finishing coat of paint applied to the walls with the window and door casing added as well as baseboards and a banner rail around the top of the wall.

Finally decisions will have to be made about replacing the floor as well as the wall decor (what we want on the walls and where we want things to hang).

Let’s hear it for Peter who pulled it all together

When its all done we should have a grand open house, invite our friends, make some money, and have a good time…..!
