Around Rotary’s World

The UN reports that a deadly combination of drought, on-going conflict and escalating food prices has placed over 11 million people in need of life-saving aid in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. Over 2.5 million of them are children under the age of five.
This complex emergency is considered the worst one the region has witnessed in 60 years.
Children in central south Somalia face never-ending suffering in what is arguably one of the most extreme, indiscriminate and complex conflicts in today’s world. With famine now declared in two regions of Southern Somalia and malnutrition rates at emergency levels across the Horn of Africa, almost 720,000 children are at risk of death without urgent assistance.
Malnutrition rates among children in Northern Kenya alone are now above 25%, and in some districts, is as high as 37.4%. Thousands of families are crossing the border from Somalia to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, which are already completely overwhelmed due to years of conflict.

David invited Jean Young and Lynette Kershaw to speak to us this morning about what they are doing to both raise awareness of the humanitarian disaster that’s happening in the Horn of Africa and to seek our support for a Somalia Fundraiser on Thursday August 11th at the QB Civic Centre. The evening will start at 6:30 and will feature a Wine and Tapa start to the evening with several local restaurants participating. A Talent show will follow highlighting local artists. Silent Auction items will be up for bidding. Entry will be by donation.

Jean and Lynette stress that the planning is very much a “work in progress”; they’ve been busy signing on Restaurants to participate in the Tapa Bar, soliciting Silent Auction items and signing up talent for the Talent Show.

To date they report that the Village of QB has donated the Civic Centre, Qualicum School of Dance will participate in the Talent Show and Phil Dwyer is a maybe, Thelassa Restaurant has agreed to participate and offers of Silent Auction items are coming in.

How Can We Help?

Jean and Lynette need volunteers
  1. To help with set up;
  2. To work at the door selling tickets;
  3. To assist with the logistics of the Talent Show;
  4. To meet and greet;
  5. To source Silent Auction items.

Phone 250-752-1508 if you can help!

International Director Stuart will be canvassing members of the International Committee to explore way’s we as a Club can contribute and support Jean and Lynette. Stay tuned.

Rotary Moment

Ed reminded us that Membership (inviting people to join our club) was a responsibility that we all owned individually and was not something we leave for someone else in the Club to do. Ed suggested we wear a Rotary Pin and when someone asks about the Pin give them the little Blue Card entitled ’What’s Rotary All About”. The people in our club who have sponsored new members – Stuart, Ron, Pat, Larry and others started by “asking”; all you have to do is ask; so do it and, get off your Ask.

Announcements

Ron announced that the head count for Sunday August 7th Fellowship BBQ at Kim and Jill’s was 41. Festivities start at 4 pm. Kim and Jill ‘s address is 2260 Kerr Road. Kerr Road is off Station Road (Station Road runs between the Alberni Hwy and Grafton Road in Coombs) Station Road is the first road east of Goats on the Roof. Park on Kerr Road and Kim asks that you respect his neighbors when selecting your parking spot.

Program

Ken Walker has been a Rotarian for more than 25 years, is a Charter Member of our Club, and he had never given a Classification Talk until this morning: now that’s really lying low.

Ken’s 2 brothers and one sister grew up in Saskatoon and Regina. Ken’s father practiced law in Saskatoon and also served as the Attorney General of Saskatchewan in Tommy Douglas’s Cabinet. Ken graduated from U of S Law School and practiced first with his father in Saskatoon. Ken established himself in Qualicum as a partner in the firm Walker and Wilson. Ken has 2 sons and a daughter and one granddaughter.

Ken’s 2 passions are travelling and sailing. Ken has travelled extensively in South East Asia and in India and in particular is attracted to India. He travelled to Delhi as a part of a 2-week Rotary Friendship Exchange and following the Delhi experience and on a subsequent trip travelled throughout the sub continent. Ken’s photo’s capture the diversity, the squalor, the potential and the mystery of this most interesting part of the world.

Ken’s sailing experience is fairly extensive and from the viewpoint of this retired sailor Ken’s offshore accomplishment is significant. Ken’s offshore experience includes a transit of the North Atlantic from Scotland via Iceland and Greenland to North America, that’s a daunting sail for a boy who grew up in Saskatchewan. There are many, many challenges that await once you’ve been bitten by the sailing bug and I can’t help but wonder what offshore dreams Ken has tucked away?
