Around Rotary’s World

Rotary District 1100 - in the West Country and Welsh Marches of the United Kingdom
UK Rotary District 1100.http://www.rotary1100.org/DistrictHome.aspx encourages their 67 clubs to place an emphasis on youth activity (under 17 years of age) and to that end they feature a youth home page on their website Here’s an excerpt from their District Youth Opportunities Home Page

WELCOME everyone to the Youth Service section of our District website. These pages are intended to raise awareness of Rotarians, young people and those working with young people to the rich opportunities Rotary has to offer youth in D1100, and to be a source of information and support for those organizing or thinking of organizing a youth event.
It is hoped that Rotarians interested in youth opportunities will regard these pages as their own, put forward new ideas, share experiences and offer or seek advice We are all members of a “Youth Investment” club.
Citizenship initiatives will stimulate the interest and understanding of young people in their community and the world around them. All of them will help young people develop new friendships and equip them in later life to achieve their full potential
.

The District wide Rotary Young Chef competition was created to give young people the chance to show off their creative talents, to promote healthy eating and to learn an important life skill. All secondary school age students are eligible for this competition

Portishead Rotary Club formed the District’s first RotaKids Club. RotaKids was started at an elementary school for kids under 9 as their "Interest Club” They have filled Christmas Shoe Boxes and also conducted a fundraiser with funds going to a charity. Rotary provided badges and caps and attends their meetings. To find out more about Rotakids, go to Youth/Interact & rotakids on the District website.

Ken looks pleased with himself after successfully reciting the Four Way Test – looking humble obviously isn’t one of the requirements of a good Rotarian

Announcements

President Ken announced
  1. The Visioning Session originally scheduled for April 27th has been postponed and re-scheduled to our regular Tuesday morning meeting on June 1. The June 1st meeting will be extended until 10 am. The reason for the change is that we have reached a point in the Visioning process where it’s essential that everyone in the club be present to participate. If this process is to have any meaning, and we're at the goal setting stage now, then members participation and “buy in” is essential. President Ken asks that you adjust your work schedule on this one Tuesday so that you will be able to participate.
  2. Ken will confirm, but on either May 19th or May 26th we will be visiting The Rotary Club of Parksville AM meeting at the Beach Club in Parksville. On the week that we visit Parksville our regular meeting will be cancelled.
  3. The District Conference “Fulfilling Dreams goes June 4,5, & 6th in Longview Washington; you can registration on line on the District website.

Program

Randy Holmquist, owner of Canadian Electric Vehicles (CEV), Errington, BC converted his car to electric in the 1990s as a hobby – a starting point from which Holmquist has developed a successful global business. CEV was established in 1995 with the initial focus to provide the designs and parts for converting gas vehicles to non-polluting electric. Conversions ranged from three wheeled vehicles, 22’ house boat and full-sized cars and trucks. In 2000 CEV was approached by Los Angeles airport to design and build a zero emission aircraft refueling truck. Since then over 50 three ton trucks have been converted to electric and are in service in North America, Middle East, Puerto Rico, Australia and Europe. The Might-E Tug, electric towing unit, was designed by Holmquist to reduce employee injuries by towing a variety of carts and equipment weighing up to 10,000 pounds. Over 150 Might-E Tugs are now in use around the world in hospitals, ferry terminals, manufacturing plants and airports. Holmquist’s primary focus is the Might-E Truck, a custom electric utility vehicle used as maintenance service vehicle, garbage pickup and grounds keeping. The Might-E Truck is in operation at campuses, resorts, municipalities, fire stations, and federal and provincial governments.

David and Stuart thank Randy for his presentation and present him with his PolioPlus Certificate

A good turnout on Friday to collect sort and price had everything ready for the 9 a.m. start on Saturday morning. Experts were brought in to help with the pricing – no expense was spared

Not everyone present was there to do a good days work

Ron called this morning

Ron called this morning to tell me Pisa is spelt with a double Z as in Boston Pizza. Also Mayfair Lanes is in Victoria and that's not where the Bowling's going to happen; it's going to happen on May 14th at Sunset Lanes in Parksville.

If anyone else has any complements to bestow on the Scuttlebutt editor don't hesitate to call or comment. YIR
