Around Rotary’s World

PolioPlus News

This mornings New York Times reports Remarkable Progress in halting the spread of Polio and believes the goal to eradicate Polio can now be achieved

  1. In Nigeria where in 2002 Moslem Leaders stopped immunization efforts, WHO reports that so far this year in Nigeria only 2 children have been paralyzed compared to 123 at the same time last year.
  2. In India’s densely populated and poorest states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar no cases have been reported for 4 months.
  3. Globally this year only 56 new cases have been reported that’s a drop of 75% in a single year. WHO officials described that percentage drop as “remarkable’.

Korean Rotarians Doing Good in the World
Korean Rotarians were active in a wide range of projects last year that helped advance the mission of The Rotary Foundation, including helping to turn remnants of the Korean War into a lasting symbol of peace.

Several Korean clubs collected empty gun cartridges to be melted down and used to make a 37.5-ton bell that is now the central feature of the World Peace Bell Park in Hwacheon-gun. Cartridges from conflicts in 29 other countries, including Ethiopia, Israel, and the Philippines, were also used in the bell.

Gift of Life International
With the help of Rotary Foundation Matching Grants, Koreans in District 3640 also funded heart surgeries for 240 children through Gift of Life International. Districts 3630 and 3650 funded heart surgeries for 134 children from Mongolia. Gift of Life is run through the efforts of Rotary clubs worldwide.

Rotary International President John Kenny

An excerpt from Rotary President John Kenny’s April message to Rotarians
At any given time, every one of Rotary’s 33,000-plus clubs is carrying out some form of vital service in its local community and often internationally as well. Under Rotary’s structure, each club works autonomously within a broader network that supports and inspires our efforts. An important piece of that network is the Rotary World Magazine Press, made up of The Rotarian and 31 regional magazines in 25 languages.

The Canadian Rotary Centennial Afghanistan Challenge

The Canadian Rotary Centennial Afghanistan Challenge project is seeking donations from Canadian Rotarians in order to build and furnish a school in Afghanistan.
The government of Canada, through CIDA, will match funds up to CAD$330,000. (Read the news item for more information on the project.)

Individuals, clubs and districts can make contributions by employing units of challenge of differing values, including:

  1. Help build a classroom: $400 (Total of 20 classrooms @ $10,250 each, all inclusive)
  2. Help furnish a classroom: $100 (Total of 20 classrooms @ $2,700 each, all inclusive)
  3. Buy a student desk: $25 (Total of 1,250 needed @ $25 each)

Please help make an Afghan child's dream of an education real. Let us together "match hope with action".

”CAREER FAIR DAY” A ROTARY VOCATIONAL PROJECT

Bob and George introduced a joint Parksville AM/QB Sunrise Rotary Vocational Project…. A day of Trades & Technology hands on demonstrations for 600-800 Oceanside grades 8 & 9 students with follow up information for Parents. The Fair is scheduled for Tuesday October 27th from 10 until 3 pm and in the evening from 6 to 9 pm. Set up and take down will occur the day before and the day after respectively.

Our club has been a long time supporter of Trades and Technology Programs and Students at KSS. This next Rotary year we are taking the next step:
  1. George and Bob have forged a partnership with The Rotary club of Parksville AM and their Vocational Committee representatives Don Tardiff and Ray Walker.
  2. The Fair will be expanded to include all of School District 69 (Oceanside) Students and Parents
  3. Rotarians from both clubs will serve on the planning committees
  4. Funding will come from the Industry and Training Authority of B.C.
  5. School District #69 will provide the “up-front” funding that will later be reimbursed by ITA of BC.
  6. The Fair will move to a day long event at Ballenas Secondary in Parksville
  7. Students will be bussed in to take part
  8. Local employers will participate and provide a hands-on opportunity for the 600 grade 8 and 9 Oceanside students
  9. In the evening a speaker from the Industry and Training Authority will speak to parents about career opportunities in the Trades and Technologies

Five Planning Groups have been structured and they include:
  1. Exhibitor Recruitment – Chair by Parksville AM
  2. Event Site/Setup/Take down - Chair by Parksville AM
  3. Promotion & Publicity – Chaired by George Venner- QB Sunrise
  4. Parents Event – Chaired by Bob Brown- QB Sunrise
  5. Schools Liaison & Transport - Steve Stahley-KSS
  6. Each of the first four Planning Groups needs two members per club
  7. Contact George or Bob to volunteer – estimate of your time commitment is 1 meeting per month plus assignments coming out of those meetings
  8. George and Bob stress that interest in an area and personal contacts in an area would be helpful

In the next two weeks Our Club Needs:
  1. Eight Committee Members To Step Forward
  2. Member inputs re possible exhibitors - a list was distributed this morning

This is the biggest thing we have ever tried. The outcome has significant implications for the students and for the Trades and Technology employers in Oceanside. It also provides us with a great opportunity to showcase Rotary and promote membership in our two clubs. Lets get behind George, Bob, Don Tardiff , Ray Walker and Steve Stahley and make this event memorable.
